Someone grab a flashlight

Riverside, Ca –

Did you know that the UC Riverside campus has just one substation serving electrical power to the campus? Because of this, when a problem occurs with our primary power supply it can create significant problems for UCR data center operations.

After the campus experienced a series of power issues in October 2018, which negatively impacted data center operations, UCR Information Technology Solutions made improvements to their uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup, and also began tracking how many power outages the data center had to transfer to the UPS to maintain data center operations while primary power was being restored (see chart below).

While the UPS backup can help to provide temporary power during a primary supply loss, it is important for the UCR data center to have consistent power and not have to rely on the UPS, except on rare occasions. With 20 unique power outages over the past 8 months, it reinforces how vital it is to have a consistent and reliable power supply for our primary data center, as well as a reliable UPS for data center operations that remain on-premise.

One of the key benefits of Project Genesis is that it addresses our power issues by moving our primary data center operations to the Cyxtera OC2 colocation in Irvine, CA. Their facility is equipped with state of the art redundancies including two unique primary sources power (feed from two substations) as well as modern UPS systems. Moving our UCR data to the Cyxtera facility will greatly minimize the risk of a power loss that could create a major crisis for campus operations.
